Academic Overview
Prafulla Chandra Sen Government Medical College & Hospital (PCSGMCH) is affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college offers a rigorous undergraduate medical education programme grounded in the NMC Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum.
Undergraduate Programme
The MBBS degree programme spans 5½ years including a one-year compulsory rotating internship. Admission is through NEET-UG conducted by the National Testing Agency. The college has an annual intake of 100 MBBS seats, with its first batch admitted in the academic year 2022–23.
The curriculum follows the NMC CBME framework with structured phases:
- Phase I (1 year): Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry
- Phase II (1½ years): Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Community Medicine (Part I)
- Phase III Part I (1 year): Ophthalmology, ENT, Community Medicine (Part II), Forensic Medicine
- Phase III Part II (1 year): General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics
- Internship (1 year): Compulsory rotating clinical postings across all major departments
Affiliated University
All degrees are conferred by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology campus, Salt Lake, Kolkata. The current Vice-Chancellor is Prof. (Dr.) Mukul Bhattacharyya and Registrar is Prof. (Dr.) Indrajit Gupta.
National Medical Commission Recognition
PCSGMCH is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), New Delhi, as a medical institution eligible to run the MBBS programme. The college was established under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (Phase II) for new government medical colleges in underserved districts.
Teaching Hospital
The attached teaching hospital has 594 beds across 23 clinical departments. Students receive mandatory clinical exposure through OPD postings, ward rounds, emergency duty, and procedural skill workshops conducted throughout the MBBS programme. The hospital serves a catchment population of over 30 lakh.
Examination
University examinations are conducted by WBUHS at the end of each phase. Supplementary examinations are held as per university schedule. Internal assessment contributes to the final score as per the NMC CBME guidelines.
